Justice system in BC still needs improvement, according to review

The justice system in British Columbia is getting better at reducing backlogs but still needs some improvement. According to Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Suzanne Anton, there has been fewer cases discontinued due to an unreasonable delay.

4 years ago, the Province commissioned Geoffrey Cowper, a Vancouver litigation lawyer, to review the justice system in British Columbia.

In an update on his recommendations from that review, Cowper says progress has been made on timeliness, transparency, the early resolution process and all the players in the system are working more efficiently. However, he says there are some outstanding issues with the number of breach cases and the number of domestic violence cases both on the rise.

He says the Province still needs to take a good look at options for restorative justice.
