Island MP Not Happy With Feds Abandoned Boat Program

An Island Member of Parliament who pushed for rules on dealing with abandoned boats says the governments newly announced abandoned boats program isn’t nearly enough.

The feds announced more than $6,000,000 will be made available over five years to help communities move abandoned vessels out of the water.

NDP MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith Sheila Malcolmson says in Parliament, she tabled a broader bill which offers more than what the government’s does.

“Local markets for salvage and recycling, vessel registration and making the system more user pay so this doesn’t end up all on the backs of tax payers.”

Malcolmson notes the $1,000,000 put forth a year for recovering abandoned boats is nothing, pointing out it costs more than that to rescue two boats from Deep Bay and Ladysmith.
