Hydro receives approval to remove Salmon River dam

BC Hydro is set to begin work on removing the dam in Salmon River.

The dam diverts water from Salmon River to the Campbell River system, but there have been issues identified with fish passage in the river so Hydro has decided to remove the dam.

Spokesperson Stephen Watson says they’ve now received approval from the BC Utilities Commission to begin work, which will start July 1st.

“We have to work within the fisheries industry work window, so we’ll divert one side of the river to one side and remove that section of dam and then, once that’s done, re-divert the water to the other [remediated] area and then remove the [second] section.”

Watson says the goal is to have all the work complete by mid-September.
