Penfield Elementary closed due to fire

Penfield Elementary is closed for the day due to an early morning fire.

The Campbell River Fire Department received the call at around 7:18 AM, according to Deputy Fire Chief Chris Vrabel.

He says when they arrived on scene, they found that one wing of the school had a smoky condition. Vrabel says it took them a while to figure out the cause of the smoke. After investigating, crews discovered that the source was a built-in electrical heating unit.

Vrabel says they isolated the smoke, but the school district deemed the school unsafe for kids to reenter for the day.

Vrabel adds thankfully, there were no injuries. He says no one was in the school at the time. The school’s principal made the call as he was the first to arrive at the building.

Due to the air quality, classes have been cancelled for the day but school is expected to be back in session after the Thanksgiving long weekend.
