Large fire at the Campbell River Yard Waste facility only one of numerous calls to fire crews Thursday night

Campbell River fire crews battled a large fire at the yard waste facility at the end of Willis Rd. Thursday night.

Deputy fire chief Thomas Doherty.

Doherty says it took them a few hours to put out the fire, nobody was hurt and there was no property damage. They do have an idea of what caused the fire.

The fire department was later called to the Ken Forde boat ramp area where people were releasing sky lanterns, which is currently not allowed as it falls under the campfire ban.

Doherty says they investigated and found several lanterns that had come down on the beach.

He reminds people to use extreme caution when they are out in nature right now.

Doherty says they were called out again at 2:15 a.m. in the morning to put out a suspicious dumpster fire at the Sportsplex.

There was no further property damage and the RCMP are now investigating that fire.
