BC Teachers’ Federation President Jim Iker says teachers will a vote on whether to drop their strike if the government agrees to binding arbitration.
The BC Government had on the weekend ruled out binding arbitration as Education Minister Peter Fassbender on Saturday said, “this afternoon, Peter Cameron, lead negotiator for the British Columbia Public School Employers Association, advised me to reject yesterday’s call from the BCTF to enter binding arbitration. I agreed.”
Iker spoke at a press conference Monday morning, saying under their proposal wages and benefits would be put to binding arbitration, as well as an interim learning improvement fund.
But the catch remains: the government must remove a controversial E-80 contract clause, which Iker says is an attempt to dodge two court losses around class size and composition.
BC teachers will vote on Wednesday.
