Stolen First Nations mask returned in Alert Bay

On September 19, 2014, Alert Bay RCMP notified the media of a traditional carved mask that was stolen from a property in Alert Bay, British Columbia.

On September 24, 2014, a private collector voluntarily surrendered the carved mask to the Alert Bay RCMP Detachment. Due to the circumstances, they will not be facing any charges of possession of property obtained by crime. The mask was confirmed to be the same as that stolen the previous week and it was subsequently returned to the rightful owner.

As a result of the investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested in the evening of September 24th, 2014. He was later released on a Promise to Appear in Provincial Court on November 12, 2014, at 9:30 AM, in Port Hardy. The man faces charges of breaking and entering, theft, and public mischief.

As these charges are not yet sworn, the man’s name cannot be released at this time. The Alert Bay RCMP would like to thank the public and media for their assistance in solving this crime.
