A huge plankton bloom has killed salmon at one of Marine Harvest’s farm locations near Port Hardy.

Communications manager Ian Roberts says the plankton thrived during the hot summer days.

Roberts says the deaths happened at a farm at Marsh Bay where warm water and allowed a specific species of plankton to thrive.

Roberts says the loss of salmon represents about two or three percent of Marine Harvest’s annual production so there will not be an impact on their production line and the loss will be covered by crop insurance.
