Plankton bloom kills thousands of farmed salmon

A huge plankton bloom has killed salmon at one of Marine Harvest’s farm locations near Port Hardy.

Communications managerĀ Ian Roberts says the plankton thrived during the hot summer days.

Roberts says theĀ deaths happened at a farm at Marsh Bay where warmĀ water and allowed a specific species of plankton to thrive.

Roberts says the loss of salmon representsĀ about two or three percent of Marine Harvest’s annual production so there will not be an impact on their production line and the loss will be covered by crop insurance.
