Locals protest the closure of island Credit Union branches

Coastal Community Credit Union is closing branches in Sointula, Alert Bay, Cortes Island, and reducing their hours at the Quadra Island Branch.

A group of disgruntled residents from those communities was at the Credit Union’s AGM Wednesday night in Nanaimo.

Joe Christiano, Chief Community and Marketing Officer for Coastal Community says it was a tough choice to close the branches, but the credit union doesn’t think keeping them open is viable.

Bruce Burrows, from Sointula, is leading the charge against the closures.

He says the communities will suffer as businesses and residents will not have access to cash, and the closest bank will be a lengthy ferry ride away.

At Wednesday evening’s AGM, Burrow’s says they notified the credit union board that they’re filing a resolution, calling on a special meeting to be hosted on the issue of keeping the branches open.
