Installation set to start on municipal broadband network

Construction is set to get underway on a new municipal high speed broadband network in Campbell River.

City Economic Development Officer Rose Klukas says it’s the first municipal broadband service on Vancouver Island.

She says availability of high speed, affordable, enterprise level fibre was a barrier for some existing businesses in town and was also a barrier for businesses looking to move here.

The installation will expand the current fibre optic network and integrate commerical buildings and strategic development areas.

The city received a grant from the Island Coastal Economic Trust to help pay for the project.

The work is expected to start the week of June 19th, in the area of 11th, Cedar St, Beach St, Alder St., and St. Ann’s from 7 a.m to 6 p.m.

Drivers should expect minor delays and avoid the area if possible.
