Researchers at North Island College have been hard at work since 2012 working on projects investigating sustainability and local aquaculture.
Two years ago NIC was granted a 2 million dollar National Science and Engineering Research Council Industry Chair Position, the funding is to be spread over five years.
The manager of the center of applied research, technology and innovation, Naomi Tabata, says the first phase of research is focused on kelp production.
Tabata says they are still in the first phase of the research.
Tabata says they are now going to look at producing kelp at multiple farm sites in the spring.
