The city wants people to keep it spooky, but safe, in Campbell River.
With Halloween just under a week away the city is giving people some tips on how to do just that. The city says you shouldn’t play with fire and that you need to “see and be seen when stepping out.”
Using battery-operated candles instead of real ones will cut your risk of a fire by a wide margin. Kids should also be taught the “stop, drop, and roll” method in case their costumes catch on fire.
If you decide to use real candles jack-o-lanterns should be placed well away from anything that can burn and out of the way of doorsteps, walkways, and yards. You should also make sure all your smoke alarms are working.
Trick-or-treaters should walk against traffic, in well-lit areas and use sidewalks and crosswalks. Costumes should also not have long, trailing fabric to avoid tripping. They should include a flashlight, glow stick or reflectors and eye holes on masks needs to be big enough that they can see properly.
