CRFD has safety tips for Burn Awareness Week

The Campbell River Fire Department is reminding everyone that this is Burn Awareness Week.

The annual province-wide campaign is aimed at getting the word out about the risks of burns in the home.

Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty says hot water scalds are the leading cause of burns to children and that the vast majority of them are preventable.

With that in mind some tips to help reduce burns include turning the cold water on first before adding hot water when using the taps, always testing bath and sink water before a child uses it, and never leaving a child unattended while bathing.

Children should also be reminded that matches and lighters are tools for grownups, not toys. Doherty says one of the leading causes of fire deaths for young children is playing with matches and lighters.
