City softens invasive plants/noxious weeds bylaw before passing it

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.: Property owners in Campbell River won’t be forced to take care of weeds, unless someone complains.

City council made some alterations to a proposed bylaw dealing with invasive plants and noxious weeds at Monday’s meeting.

The original wording would have required property owners to remove things like scotch broom on a regular basis.

However during the first and second readings of the bylaw concern was raised that the bylaw was too heavy handed.

Before its third reading on Monday it was changed so that the city could force people to remove the offending plants only if it received a complaint.
