The big one is still expected

That 4.6 magnitude earthquake many of us felt Wednesday evening might have you wondering if this one was related to all those small quakes in the area East of Port Hardy.

Taimi  Mulder an earthquake seismologist with Natural Resources Canada says actually it is a bit different.

Some people might be thinking that Wednesday’s small quake helped decrease the chances of the big one hitting as it relieved some pressure, not so says Mulder.

Mulder says in fact it is more efficient for the earth’s processes to release the pressure in a larger event. She adds here on the Island we should continue to expect not only the big one, which could have a magnitude of 9, but also a more local quake on Vancouver Island with a magnitude closer to 6 or 7.
