Chamber of Commerce wants province to work with feds on fish farms

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-The Campbell River Chamber of Commerce has four things it wants the province to work with the feds on to improve aquaculture.

Those ideas are outlined in a policy submission the chamber will be making to the BC Chamber at its Annual General Meeting.

The local chamber says the billion dollar fish farm industry in BC is facing serious challenges.

It says they stem from things like an outdated regulatory regime and public concern over environmental performance and food safety.

The chambers four recommendations are ensuring fish farms are given fair access to long term tenures for fish farms, making sure that provincial consultation with First Nations is appropriate, supporting efforts to build the public’s confidence in the industry, and creating a federal aquaculture act that establishes national standards.

The BC Chamber AGM is happening in Kamloops from May 24th to May 26th.
