Campbell River expands mapping services

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The city of Campbell River is trying out something new to improve its map services.

A new open data catalogue has been added to the city’s website. Open data is information that can be freely used, modified and shared by anyone.

“To increase access to the city’s mapping data, our geographic information services (GIS) department has launched a catalogue to allow people to pinpoint features and download for viewing on Google Maps,” said Warren Kalyn, the city’s information technology manager, in a release.

“We anticipate this open data repository will be of particular interest to developers, businesses and citizens who require enriched data access delivered through interactive mapping.”

New information available on the website includes:

• The municipal boundary
• Property parcels
• Building footprints
• Road and bike routes
• City-maintained parks and public washrooms
• Community gardens
• Garbage routes
• Electric-vehicle charging stations
• Areas of interest, like the hospital, fire halls, the museum and library

Residents can download the open data catalogue via the city’s website at this link.

The data can then be viewed on Google Maps.

According to a release from the city, with this new system, the GIS will no longer need to prepare separate map files for download.

Open data will also result in enhanced services and products when developers build applications using the data to provide valuable information for residents and tourist.
