CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-You won’t be seeing any artistic crosswalks in Campbell River anymore.
That’s because council passed a motion Monday clarifying the city’s position on non-standardized crosswalk markings. That position is they’re prohibited.
To balance that out council also approved a motion to make sure staff included opportunities for artistic installations be included in the Public Art Master Plan, which is being worked on right now.
The city was in a bit of a grey area, as non-standardized crosswalks are technically banned by city policy. That meant an exemption had to be passed every time something like a rainbow crosswalk was to be painted.
The city says council confirmed the policy banning non-standardized crosswalks for safety reasons and to reduce the cost of maintaining artistic installations.
