Suspicious structure fire on 16th Ave. causes extensive smoke damage

Campbell River Fire Rescue has turned over the scene of a fire at 1441 16th Ave. to the RCMP for further investigation of what appears to be a suspicious fire.

“Just after midnight on Tuesday, Jan. 13, Campbell River fire crews responded to a report of fire alarms ringing at 1441 16thAve.,” says Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty. “Upon arrival, crews could see smoke coming from a single-storey modular office building. Fire fighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames inside the building, and were able to contain the fire to one room of the building, but smoke damage was extensive throughout the structure.”

Doherty says the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

“Investigators from the Fire Department and RCMP were on scene early Wednesday morning to investigate the cause, which appears to be suspicious in nature,” Doherty adds.

Damage is estimated at approximately $40,000.
