SRD adopts revised concept for $47 million Strathcona Gardens revitalization

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-The REC-REATE Strathcona Gardens project has taken a big step forward.

The SRD Board has adopted a revised concept plan for the revitalization project. The expanded concept plan is a partial new build option which would include a new aquatic centre, improved fitness centre next to the new wellness centre on the first floor, improvements and upgrades to the ice facilities, and new storage and public spaces.

These changes were included after feedback from the community. SRD Director Michele Babchuk says these changes will all benefit Campbell River:

The next step in the project is to move on to schematic design. The SRD says that will be finished this year. After that, if funding is secured, construction can begin. The project is expected to cost $47 million. Typically that would be shared by the municipal, provincial, and federal governments, with each footing a third of the bill. Babchuck says there’s been a recent change to that model though:

Depending on when funding is secured, the SRD says construction could begin as early as 2020.
