Anti-SOGI 123 activist inviting parents to sign petition

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-An anti-SOGI 123 activist in Campbell River is inviting parents to a petition-signing event.

Christian McCay says it will give those who disagree with the program a chance to express their concerns. According to the SOGI (sexual orientations and gender identities) website, it’s aimed at making schools “inclusive and safe for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities.”

McCay is also one of the organizers behind the ongoing campaign in which he and others are handing anti-SOGI flyers out at schools in Campbell River. However, McCay does not have children enrolled in any District 72 schools.

Although School District 72 characterizes SOGI 123 as a set of tools for teachers and students to deal with gender and sexuality issues and not specifically a curriculum, McCay believes it is “an indoctrination program that deliberately injects confusing ideas into the minds of young children.”

He says he doesn’t believe the materials are “age-approriate” and believes that sexuality and gender identity issues should be taught to children only by their parents. McCay also says he believes the program represents a violation of religious freedom:

When McCay was asked how SOGI 123 interferes with religious freedom, he didn’t give a specific reason:

When pressed further, McCay characterized SOGI 123 itself as a religious idea:

McCay says parents who sign the petition at his event will remain anonymous:

It’s happening on May 28th at the Community Centre and May 31st at the Sportsplex from 7:00pm to 8:30pm on both nights. Meanwhile School District 72 Superintendent Thomas Longridge, who called McCay’s pamphlet campaign “alarming”, says the board does have information, available upon request, for any parent who wants to learn more about SOGI 123.
