Quinsam fire “100 per cent contained”

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- The wildfire west of Campbell River is being held by firefighters this evening.

The fire area has now reached 16 hectares in size. Flames originally began close to the mine site of the Quinsam Coal Corporation. The flames spread from a point along the Argonaut Mainline, and eventually forced an evacuation of the mine workers on Wednesday evening.

26 firefighters are currently on-site working on the fire. Two helicopters were helping to fight the fire, but have now been called off.

Two water tenders were also in the area.

According to the Coastal Fire Centre, it is now “100 per cent contained”.

No damages to the mine site or injuries from the scene have been reported.

The blaze is still believed to be human-caused. An investigator is at the scene, and the investigation is expected to take multiple days.
