We Wai Kai Nation Invests $2.3 Million in Sports Field

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C – The Quinsam Reserve will soon be home to a new set of sports fields.

The We Wai Kai Nation announced yesterday that construction is underway on a $2.3 million upgrade to the original soccer field at Quinsam.

According to a press release from the We Wai Kai Nation, the decision comes after several years of planning.

Two natural grass, professional sized soccer fields and two baseball fields are to be built over a 5-acre parcel of land in the center of the Quinsam Reserve.

Chief Brian Assu said he was pleased at the announcement.

“We are really fortunate to be in a place where we can make this kind of investment up at Quinsam,” said the chief.

“We are also really happy that it can be shared with the people of Campbell River.”

The release said that the original field was built in 1970, and has been in need of an upgrade for some time, especially since the growth in members of the WWK FC, which now has 70 children registered.

This is a first phase of a larger vision for Quinsam where the recreational facilities would be connected by trails to the Quinsam Centre and to the new Daycare/Preschool the Nation is building.

The fields will be ready in September, in the mean time, the We Wai Kai and the City of Campbell River will collaborate on how everyone can benefit from the new fields.
