CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – It’s going to be a hot weekend in Campbell River.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Eastern Vancouver Island. Affected areas include Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo, and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.
Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to hit the high twenties and low thirties along the coast, and mid-thirties inland.
The weather agency stated that a patch of cooler weather is expected by the middle of next week.
To coincide with the weather statement, Environment and Climate Change Canada, along with Medical Health Officers, have released a list of safety practices.
1) Stay hydrated by drinking cold beverages (preferably water) irrespective of your activity intake. This means you should not wait until your thirsty.
2) Keep cool: spend time in air-conditioned facilities for at least several hours every day; dress for the weather by wearing loose, light-wearing clothing; avoid sunburns, stay in the shade or use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more; never leave children or pets alone in a parked car.
3) Check in on others: people living alone are at high risk of heat-related illness. Check regularly on older people, those unable to leave their homes and anyone who may not be spending at least several hours every day in air-conditioned places for any signs of heat-related illness.
