City wants help to “paint a picture” of public art

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- The City of Campbell River is asking for public input on sketching out of a plan for art around town.

The Art in Public Spaces Master Plan project kicked off earlier this week at the first event of The Campbell River Live Streets series. City officials had a pop-up tent at the Art Battle on Wednesday night, where they gathered ideas for the initiative.

Lynn Wark, the city’s recreation and culture manager, said they’re trying to gather public opinion and make a plan from there.

“There are a lot of opportunities to create public art in Campbell River and we didn’t really have a coordinated effort as to what that would look like.”

“So we thought by having a master plan, we could take a more strategic approach to making sure the public art that we are putting into our community, is reflective of our community,” she said.

According to Wark, the city is including all forms of art into the equation.

“It can mean your typical things like sculptures and murals, that people are quite used to seeing, but it also means things like performances, music, dance, busking. Installations can be permanent or they can be temporary,” she said.

“And really our information gathering this summer will direct what it’s going to look like in the City of Campbell River.”

Besides being present at Live Street events in the city, there will also be display boards in a variety of locations including the library, the Tidemark Theatre, the Art Gallery/Visitors Centre, Strathcona Gardens, the Community Centre, City Hall, and in Willow Point and Campbellton.

“We want to hear from the community,” said Wark.

“We have fun activities lined up for the Live Streets events, an Instagram Contest, and a host of other opportunities that will allow people to share their ideas and comments. We encourage everyone in Campbell River to get involved and help us develop a vision for art in public spaces throughout our community.”
