Storm open season with loss to Nanaimo, blowout win over Oceanside

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The two-time defending Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League champions are off to a so-so start.

A 3-1 loss to the Nanaimo Buccaneers and a 6-0 shutout of the Oceanside Generals puts the Campbell River Storm at 1-1 going into this weekend’s action.

The Storm opened their 2018/19 campaign last Thursday with a loss at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Nanaimo’s Darian Harris snapped a 1-1 tie at the 2:47 mark of the third period, and the goal stood up as the game winner as the Storm couldn’t muster the tying goal.

The Buccaneers’ Billy Walters sealed the win with an empty net marker with 49 seconds to go in regulation.

Tim Prexler scored the Storm’s lone goal at the 6:42 mark of the opening frame, tying the contest at 1-1.

Both teams played tight defence, with shots even at 22 apiece.

Storm 6, Oceanside Generals 0

The following night at Rod Brind’Amour Arena, the Storm got into the win column for the first time, and they did so in emphatic fashion.

The Storm scored twice in the first period and after a scoreless middle frame, filled the Oceanside net with four more pucks to win easily.

Damon Porter scored twice for the Storm, with singles coming off the sticks of Kyle Jennings, Austin Dennison, Owen Christensen, and Mike Dyck.

Aaron de Kok got the shutout, stopping all 24 shots fired his way.

Busy weekend

The Storm are back in action Friday when they host rival Comox Valley Glacier Kings at Rod Brind’Amour.

It’s the start of a busy weekend for the Storm, who are back in action Saturday at Rod Brind’Amour to take on the Saanich Braves, who are off to a perfect start to their campaign.

Both of those games in Campbell River get underway at 7:30 p.m.

The Storm finish their weekend Sunday afternoon on the road, when they travel to Archie Browning Arena to play the host Victoria Cougars.
