CREC still have concerns over Upland Excavating Ltd. landfill

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Campbell River Environmental Committee (CREC) president Leona Adams said there are still many unresolved issues and inconsistencies with Upland Excavating Ltd.’s study for their proposed landfill across Highway 28 (Gold River Highway) from McIvor Lake.

Adams said Upland’s site sits on a fractured bedrock, and there’s a risk of landfill waste water flowing through that bedrock into Rico Lake, then into McIvor Lake which in turn will contaminate Campbell River’s source of drinking water.

“Uplands are saying that water can’t flow uphill, look at how low the pit is. But their landfill is proposed to raise far above the surface of McIvor Lake and Rico Lake – so that pit is not going to stay below Rico Lake and McIvor Lake, it will rise up,” said Adams.

Adams added that the landfill is too risky and that there are too many inconsistencies in the studies provided by Uplands and CREC’s hydrogeologist.

Currently, CREC is raising funds to help pay for the hydrogeologist they’re working with to research potential risks to the town’s water source. Adams said it’s important to get the word out and for citizens to be aware and to invest in what happens in their water source.

“For ourselves and for future generations, we feel that there should be no risk taken,” added Adams.

According to Adams, the Ministry of Environment has already given Upland a draft Operational Certificate, meaning the landfill could soon be operational.
