Kids in Campbell River get opportunity to vote

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Children might not legally be allowed to vote, but the City of Campbell River is offering a new learning experience.

Youth will be able to cast a “kids ballot” as part of this year’s municipal election.

Of course, the votes will not be official, but results will be read out during the October 22nd Campbell River council meeting.

“We’ve developed a fun ballot for kids and encourage parents and guardians to talk with children about who’s getting their vote and the importance of voting,” said Elle Brovold, Campbell River’s city clerk, in a release.

“At either of the advance polls or on general voting day, we encourage all eligible City of Campbell River residents – adults and children – to get involved and make your mark by voting.”

The “kids ballot” will be available starting with the first advance poll tomorrow, October 10th. Advance polls will be open tomorrow and on October 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Campbell River Community Centre.

General voting day is Saturday, October 20th. In Campbell River, free transit will be available to vote at either the Community Centre or Sportsplex.

Mail-in ballots are also available through the city, and polls are run in hospitals and at care homes for people who cannot get out to vote.
