CRESST calling for volunteers

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The Campbell River Emergency Services Support Team (CRESST) is holding an open house tonight for those interested in volunteering to find out more about what Emergency Service Support volunteering entails.

According to Volunteer Campbell River’s executive director Mary Catherine Williams, CRESST volunteers help residents in the event of an emergency in the community, such as floods or fires.

Emergency Service Support volunteers are not required to have first aid training, though Williams says it’s helpful when volunteers come with first aid certification.

CRESST offers training for ESS volunteers provided by the province. Williams said ESS volunteers are there to help organize and ensure that people’s needs are met in times of emergencies more than being first responders.

“(ESS volunteers are there) to make sure their needs are met, to organize the response. So where are people sleeping? Where are people eating? How are people being cared for? What emergency or medical issues are being needed to be dealt with? Clothing, all the things someone might need if they’ve been displaced from their home. The volunteers are there,” Williams said.

CRESST’s open house tonight will include a tour, a presentation, and a question and answer period for residents interested in joining the team. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.
