Credit union closures moving ahead despite opposition

There isn’t going to be a vote or a special meeting about the closure of three Coastal Community Credit Union Branches on Sointula, Alert Bay and Cortes Island.

Bruce Burrows, a Sointula resident, says they got a letter from the credit union denying their special resolution request saying there was a problem with the almost a thousand signatures they had collected.

Joe Christiano, chief community and marketing officer for Coastal Community Credit Union, says they went through the request with their lawyers and found technical problems with the signatures.

Burrows says they are not surprised their request was denied and that they are getting legal advice and looking at their next options.

The credit union branches are set to close July fifth and Christiano says the board stands behind their decision. He adds they are working to meet with individuals and businesses so they can move forward with the next step.
