Local community garden getting ready to bloom

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The Charstate Park community garden should be ready in time for spring planting.

According to Greenways Land Trust executive director Cynthia Bendickson, staff and volunteers went out to the community garden plot on Wednesday to dig the holes and put up the posts to fence the area.

“Greenways has been working on the Charstate community garden for about a year now, trying to get that in place and going,” Bendickson said.

Preliminary work included paperwork that needed to be processed through the city, as well as fundraising and gathering the materials for the garden.

“It was really exciting to see us starting to put in the fence posts for the garden. There was already a bit of work done by the city. They’ve built a little gravel parking area for the garden, and installed the water connection for us.”

Bendickson said Wednesday was the first day of all the work they will be doing throughout the winter to get the community garden ready for spring.

The garden will have 42 beds, with 20 of those already allocated to people who have applied.

Bendickson said there is still a lot of work to be done before the community garden officially opens. She said a lot of it involves construction, such as building the flower boxes and put down wood chips.

Residents interested in applying for a plot bed or help with construction can contact Greenways Land Trust through their website or through 250-287-3785.
