Extra water flow in Elk Falls Canyon, B.C. Hydro asks residents to stay away

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – A series of moderate storms may affect water flow through Campbell River’s water system.

B.C. Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson wrote in a release the inflow of water because of the rain into the reservoir means water would need to be released. This will then affect the Campbell River system through the John Hart dam to help control the upper Campbell River reservoir/Buttle Lake throughout the rainy period.

B.C. Hydro did plan to release water through Elk Falls Canyon tonight, as part of John Hart testing. Water flows will go from four cubic metres squared (m3/s) to 10 m3/s through Friday.

On Friday night, water flow in the canyon will increase to 20 m3/s and may go as high as 40 m3/s over the weekend.

B.C. Hydro is advising people to stay away from the upstream side of Elk Falls through the end of next week.
