BC Hydro reducing water spill down Elk Falls

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – BC Hydro is reducing water spill down Elk Falls today.

Currently, the flow is at 42 cubic metres per second (m3/s). According to spokesperson Stephen Watson, they are reducing the water spill down to the base flow of 4 m3/s.

The reduction comes after a series of storms that hit Vancouver Island over 12 days.

During that period, total discharge down the Campbell River was about 205 m3/s.

BC Hydro asked the public to stay away from the Elk Falls Canyon during the storms and the increased water flow in the area.

The storms knocked power out for approximately 600, 000 customers. Currently, 34, 000 still do not have power. In the north island, 2, 788 customers still do not have power, according to BC Hydro.

BC Hydro is advising residents that there may be delays in getting power back to the hardest hit areas, with most of the restoration estimated to happen in the next few days.
