BC Hydro to release more water down Elk Falls due to more rain

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The high water flow down Elk Falls Canyon will continue until next week.

This is according to an update released by BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson.

He wrote in the release that the water inflows into the watershed have been above normal for this time of the year due to continuous storm activity and snowmelt.

Watson added December and January have been the third wettest months on record.

The John Hart generating station is at full capacity. The utility expects to release 110 cubic metres per second (m3/s) down Elk Falls Canyon.

BC Hydro is asking residents to stay away from the Elk Falls Canyon and the Campbell River areas through next week due to the high water flow conditions.

The Upper Campbell River/Buttle Lake reservoir is currently at 219.85 metres. BC Hydro is slowly dropping water levels in preparation for the next storm.
