SD 72’s Liq’wala/Kwak’wala immersion program surpasses minimum registration

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The pilot immersion program rolling out in the fall has surpassed its minimum registration numbers.

The Liq’wala/Kwak’wala immersion program will be introduced in kindergarten classes at Ripple Rock Elementary school.

According to the board’s February 5th meeting, the district will consider making the program a multi-grade class if there is enough interest for it. This means that the program will include students in kindergarten and grade 1.

The district has said they will let parents know if there is more space in the class, as spaces may still open up.

The board also passed a motion for the senior management team to pursue grant opportunities to support the immersion program, in cooperation and agreement with the district’s local chiefs and councils.
