2019/2020 school year calendar for SD 72 approved

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The Board of Education has approved the 2019/2020 school year calendar.

This is after some minor changes on non-instructional and student-led conference/parent-teacher interview days, according to an announcement from School District 72.

The changes were made after feedback from staff, students and the community following discussion with the district’s consultation committee.

Previously, the district announced that parents and staff expressed their desire for a two-week long spring break. But after consultation, the final calendar will only include a one-week long spring break.

The school district’s announcement states that a two-week break would require the district to put in additional minutes to the instructional day, which would require a more extensive consultation process.

The 2019/2020 calendar also concludes the two-year calendar development cycle started by former superintendent, Tom Longridge.

Starting in the fall of 2020, current superintendent Dr. Jeremy Morrow will start a consultation process to develop school calendars for the next three years, which will give families and staff the opportunity to plan around the school calendar.

Other feedback included in the new calendar are changes to the previously scheduled student-led conference/parent-teacher interview day in November, a non-instructional day on November 1st, a non-instructional day change from February 10th to February 14th to allow for a four-day weekend for the Family Day holiday, and two dates for student-led conferences/parent-teacher interviews in the spring.

All school districts across the province are required to confirm the school calendar for the following school year by March 31st.
