BC Ground Search and Rescue receive $18.6 million

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC- Campbell River Ground Search and Rescue is thankful for a provincial grant.

In March, the provincial government granted BC Ground Search and Rescue $18.6 million.

The money was given to GSAR groups around the province to be used over the next three years.

“It takes a lot of pressure off of us, this just gives us a nice cushion to have.” said Search Manager Grant Cromer.

The money will be used for training, replacing equipment and to “plan future sustainable funding models”, according to a press release from the group.

“Our region is a diverse landscape, the training and equipment costs associated with serving this area are not small, this funding contribution will go a long way to enhancing our resources in Campbell River and Area.” said Cromer.

In 2016 it was announced that the GSAR would get $5 million per year.

With the one time grant they will be receiving 24% more, according to the press release.

The fund is the highest single contribution to BC’S GSAR’s.

Campbell River Search and Rescue serves one of the largest response areas in BC.

CRSAR has seen an increase in call volume from the average of 30-40 calls in previous years, to 52 calls in 2018 according to the press release.

“We are really fortunate to receive this money, it allows us to concentrate on what we are here to do, skillfully respond to the needs of others,” said Cromer.

“Without stable funding models like this our members energy and time is diverted to fundraising efforts to afford operational training and equipment, instead of sharpening skills.”
