Campbell River joins regional pilot program for immigrant entrepreneurs

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Campbell River may be welcoming newcomers to start businesses in the city soon.

This is according to a release from city hall.

The City of Campbell River joined a number of other communities all over the province to recruit newcomers to start new business startups in their locales.

“We’re hoping that participating in this program will help attract people to Campbell River who will start new businesses, particularly in sectors that reflect significant local and global economic development opportunities,” wrote the city’s economic development officer Rose Klukas in the release.

The pilot program is provincially-sponsored, with the aim of addressing issues that smaller communities within BC face.

“This partnership has the potential to bring new businesses, jobs and opportunities and generate a more diverse local economy, which in turn helps retain existing businesses,” Klukas added.

The program will help meet local economic development needs and encourage investment outside of bigger urban areas, with a focus on communities with populations less than 75, 000.

Entrepreneur applicants need to present a business proposal that will create at least one new job and meet the criteria in categories such as management experience, net worth, and education. Entrepreneurs are also required to visit Campbell River and present their proposal to the city before receiving a provincial referral.

The release added that only new business startups that match Campbell River’s priority sectors can apply.

Currently, the intake for Campbell River startups are in the following:

  • Professional, scientific, and technical services
  • Wood product manufacturing
  • Food and beverage services

Campbell River’s economic development department will work with local organizations such as the school district and the Immigrant Welcome Centre to provide support and information for people interested in immigrating to Campbell River.
