Mural transforms Timberline Secondary’s new entrance

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – A new mural will welcome Timberline Secondary students soon.

The mural is an original design painted by Jessica Chickite of the We Wai Kai Nation. The painting part is complete, but the whole mural will include frosted windows that will incorporate some of the design elements, according to an announcement from the school district.

The top of the mural is in the shape of a Big House, complete with a double-headed serpent named Sisiutl. The middle section is Thunderbird and Killer Whale. The bottom section has elements of Bear, Frog, Raven, and Moon.

Project funding came from School District 72’s Indigenous Education Department’s Role Model/Elder Grant.

It is part of the commitment to have physical learning environments reflect the Indigenous cultures in and around Campbell River.

The mural will be accompanied by a soon-to-be-raised totem pole, both of which signify the effort of the school district, Timberline, and local First Nations to provide learning spaces that reflect Indigenous students’ cultures as well as their sense of pride.

The new entrance is part of the construction to convert Timberline to a standalone building, after years of being combined with North Island College.

The MyCampbellRiverNow.com newsroom has reached out to artist Jessica Chickite. Her comment is forthcoming.
