Wildfire on Argonaut Rd now contained: Campbell River Fire Department

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – An overnight wildfire has grown to three hectares in Campbell River.

According to social media posts, the fire was one to two hectares big when the Campbell River Fire Department first got to the scene between Argonaut Rd and Duncan Bay Mainline.

Several residents in the Willow Point area reported that their power flickered on and off around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

The BC Wildfire Service listed the fire as three hectares in size and out of control, but manager of fire adminstration with the Campbell River Fire Department Stephanie Bremer said the fire is contained and they are confident they will be able to put it out completely in the next few hours.

“At this time, there is no risk to residents or any businesses in the area. The fire beyond the hydro transmissions line has been contained and we’re just waiting for BC Hydro to ground the area to make it safer for firefighters to get in and extinguish the rest,” Bremer said.

She added that they were immediately on scene but due to safety concerns, decided to tackle the fire early today.

Bremer said there are currently 16 firefighters from Campbell River and Oyster River, as well as six personnel from the Coastal Fire Centre.

“We anticipate that we should be there through the rest of the afternoon, going into this evening.”

She emphasized there is no risk to the public, buildings, or any infrastructure.
