DFO fines Campbell River-area residents for Fisheries Act violations

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Two Campbell River-area residents have been fined after violating the Fisheries Act.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) recently published a list of fishing-related convictions, complete with names and were the residents are from.

Roger Sewell from Campbell River was fined $4, 000 after he fished in waters where it wasn’t allowed. He also was fined for putting down his gear along the beach when the area was already closed for fishing. 

His catch of 100 2.2lb boxes of prawn, as well as a 20lb bag of prawn was seized. His charge dates back to June last year, with a conviction being handed down on March 26th.

James Mahon from Cortes Island was fined $4, 500 after he went out fishing when hours were already done for the day.

His sea urchin catch was seized, valued at $2, 241.25, according to the DFO’s convictions list. His charge dates back to September 2015, with the conviction handed down on March 21st.

There were seven other individuals on the list, with fines ranging from $1, 000 to $5, 000. A seafood company based in Richmond was charged and fined a total of $473, 131.47.
