Summer tourism looking good for Campbell River

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – The summer season looks promising for Campbell River’s tourism sector.

According to Destination Campbell River executive director Kirsten Soder, local fishing and whale-watching operators have reported that spaces are being booked quickly.

“Their pace of booking is up over the last year. Pre-bookings are well underway. That’s generally a pretty good indicator of how the season is going to go,” Soder said.

She added they first saw a significant increase in 2018 compared to 2017, with occupancy peaking at 99.4%.

“Based on our statistics that we compared with Destination BC and Destination Canada, we’re actually the highest in Canada.”

Soder said more and more people are also discovering Campbell River in the spring and fall, and occupancy now also climbs up during those “off seasons” as well.

She doesn’t expect recent federal fishign restrictions to put a damper on the summer’s tourism.

“The long-term implications of this is yet to be seen, but what we do know is that those (fishing) operators that are still full of client bookings are offering an incredible experience,” she said.

“People that are coming fro moverseas are generally not keeping their fish anyhow, so many people are completely unimpacted. The experience still remains an amazing one.”

“Long-term, this is definitely something that we’re monitoring. But I am optimistic that really, it’s about getting them on the water, it’s about having an experience. I think the operators are still doing an amazing job of fulfilling an on-the-water experience.”
