Greenways Land Trust to harvest unwanted fruits

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – In a new pilot project, Greenways Land Trust will be harvesting fruit and giving them to residents who need them.

The Fruit Tree Project will connect residents who can’t or don’t want to harvest their trees with volunteer harvesters. The volunteers split the fruits between the owners and partner organizations.

The fruits are then distributed to those who need it in the community.

The Fruit Tree Project will help reduce food waste and make healthy food items accessible to residents.

It also means less wildlife attractants on people’s lawns and yards. The Conservation Officer Service has said fallen fruit often attract bears and cougars to neighbourhoods.

Residents unable to harvest can register their tree (or trees) here or by contacting Greenways Land Trust at 250-287-3785.
