Water-resilient gardening workshop for Area D residents

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Vancouver Island may be experiencing drought conditions, but gardens and lawns still need watering.

To tackle the issue, the Strathcona Regional District is hosting a workshop for Area D residents next Wednesday.

The workshop teaches techniques on using water efficiently, which include landscaping for maximum water efficiency, using drought-tolerant grasses and plants, as well as choosing timers that work on Stage 1 and 2 restrictions.

Currently, Area D is in Stage 1 restriction, meaning certain home addresses can only water with a sprinkler, soaker or weeper hose at certain days and times.

The SRD says there are a few other ways you can maintain your lawn’s health during a dry spell.

Those include raising your lawn mower 2.5 to three inches to prevent evaporation, leaving clipping on the grass, and aerating and using lime in the spring.

The workshop will be available to those who live south of Jubilee Parkway, outside the Campbell River municipal boundary and ending in Oyster River.

The workshop will be held at the Oyster Bay Resorts Hall (4357 S Island Highway). Doors open at 6:30pm.

Interested residents are asked to call 250-203-1820 or email [email protected] to pre-register.
