Special Olympics fundraiser tournament a success

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Great community participation is what fuels Special Olympians.

And Saturday’s fastball tournament was no different.

Maureen Hunter, the Special Olympics Campbell River coordinator, says every athlete enjoyed themselves on the diamond.

The Campbell River Giants partnered with the Special Olympics for the fundraiser tournament. The Giants hosted the Parksville Red Sox and the Longwood Brewers at the Sportsplex. While the fastball tournament was going on, the Special Olympics also held their regional softball tournament.

Both events were well-attended, and Hunter says the Giants raised $1700 for them.

“We had a great turnout of athletes and people from out of town. The ball tournament was exceptional and the teams that came were good competition,” Hunter said.

But Hunter says the biggest highlight was that one of the players bought the Special Olympians tickets to the Blue Jays game against the Seattle Mariners.

She says they don’t know who bought the tickets, but they’re grateful for the surprise.

The Special Olympics have other fundraisers planned throughout the summer, including a fundraising dinner at Boston Pizza this Thursday. They have a Toonie Tuesday event on July 23rd at Spirit Square, and a charity golf game on August 17th.
