Black Creek, Sayward win $100,000 for new play areas

VANCOUVER ISLAND, B.C- Black Creek and Sayward are among the winners of the BCAA Play Here competition.

The results were released this morning.

The two communities have made it into the top three finalists and will get $100,000 to put towards renovations.

Director of Engagement for BCAA Shawn Pettipas says representatives will be visiting the winning communities to determine what is needed.

“When we go visit these communities we really want to get a sense of what these play spaces will be used for, what are the ages of the children, is it a school, it is a community center. We talk about things like accessibility and different types of play kids can engage in,” said Pettipas.

“Then we will go home, work with our vendors, and we will do our best to deliver the dream play space to that community.”

Once that is done, BCAA and its vendors will work to build the play areas which Pettipas says should be done before winter.

“Every play space is different but in general we try to get them done as soon as possible before the winter months.”

Over the past four years, Pettipas says $1.3 million has been invested into communities with 12 play spaces being built across the province.
