Legal centre for parents opening in Campbell River

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – A legal aid centre for parents is opening Campbell River.

The centre will provide legal aid services to families when a child is at risk of being removed from home or has already been taken into care because of safety concerns.

It opens next Thursday in downtown Campbell River.

Roughly 60 per cent of children in care are Indigenous, with 62 per cent of children in care in Campbell River coming from Indigenous communities. This is why the centre aims to focus on helping Indigenous families, though anyone can access services.

The legal aid centre will offer services early in the child protection process, starting from when social workers contact a family about a child’s safety.

Staff at the centre will support parents with legal matters, but also other underlying issues such as housing or addictions.

The Legal Services Society provides legal aid to those with low incomes across BC. The society has other Parents Legal Centres in Vancouver, Surrey, Prince George, Duncan, Smithers, Kamloops, Williams Lake and Victoria.

The Campbell River Parents Legal Centre is at 870D 13th Avenue.
