“Don’t jump off the pier”: city

Jumping off Discovery Pier may sound fun, but it’s not legal.

That’s according to Peter Wipper, the city’s Director of Planning. He says any event that takes place at the pier need a city permit.

A resident is organizing a jump on Sunday at the pier, but Wipper says the individual didn’t apply for a permit.

And the city is not going to issue one for a dangerous activity like jumping off the pier.

“If they proceed with it, they can be subject to fines ranging from $100 to $150… we don’t condone this sort of activity on our pier so even if they applied for a permit, we wouldn’t give it to them,” Wipper said.

There are other places in Campbell River where the public can swim, he adds.

“There’s lots of parks and places the public is invited to swim and there are safe places for the public to get back onto the structure after jumping off that’s not full of people angling with fishing lines and hooks, which is what that pier is designed for.”

He adds that the depth of the water is not much of an issue, but the current is.

“The current there – when the tide is running, it’s very swift. It’ll be almost impossible to get back to the pier once the current’s swept you away.”

“Go to McIvor Lake and enjoy the lake there if you want to swim.”
