Saturday morning walk marks International Overdose Awareness Day

Raising awareness and erasing the stigma of drug-related deaths.

Those are just two of the reasons why the city is marking International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Masters of Hope are hosting an awareness walk from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

It starts and finishes at the Long House in Ostler Park.

Action taken

This week, the Campbell River Council Council endorsed a grant application for $53,000 to support localized overdose response work.

The Community Action Team (CAT) is doing work through overdose prevention responses to the opioid crisis with the main goal of saving lives in the city

Currently, City staff and RCMP are involved members of the team, Councillor Ron Kerr participates on the leadership team, and the City hosts and administers the funding.

The City provides the, administration and financial services at no cost to the project, which allows all funding to be spent on the program.

Report released

Earlier this month, the BC Coroners Service released its annual report on the amount of overdose deaths throughout the province.

The reports show significantly fewer OD deaths in both the Island Health and Coastal Health regions.

The report outlines overdoses from street drugs, medications that were not prescribed or combinations of either with prescribed medications.

So far this year Island Health has seen 82 overdose deaths and Vancouver Coastal Health has seen 164.

In 2018 Vancouver Coastal Health had 442 deaths in all of 2018, and Island Health had 242.
