WildSafe BC hosting 4th annual ‘BC Goes Wild’ event

WildSafe BC is making sure you’re staying safe and having fun when it comes to wildlife safety.

The 4th annual BC Goes Wild event is happening in Cumberland this weekend.

It will feature a wide range of activities starting Friday night and wrapping up Sunday afternoon.

Cumberland WildSafe BC Coordinator Cali Barton says people tend to forget where we live, so it’s important to keep everyone educated on animal safety.

“We live in wildlife country, even though Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland are municipalities we are still surrounded by forests and wildlife lands so we commonly encounter all kinds of wildlife,” said Barton.

“It’s important for people to know how to interact safely with wildlife, how to respect them and give them space so they stay wild and healthy, and also for people to stay safe with the larger animals like bears or cougars.”

The festivities kick off on Friday night with Community Discovery Day, which will happen at the Cumberland Rec Centre from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.

To talk about bear safety, Barton says a bear spray demo will take place in Village Park from 11:00am to 1:00pm Saturday.

WildSafe BC says September is historically a month where human-bear conflicts are at their highest so an event like this provides a fun and easy way to keep wildlife and humans save.
